Feng Shui, literally translated as ‘Wind’ and ‘Water’, is the ancient art and science of harnessing the Chi or energy in the environment and surroundings to bring in good luck, harmony, health and prosperity into one’s life. Deeply rooted in Chinese culture and Taoist philosophy, it is a system which links man and his fate to his surroundings. Feng Shui completely revolves around Chi or energy, also known as Ki or the cosmic force. It pervades every nook and corner of the universe and moves within the body as prana or life force.
With the union of Yin and yang, the opposite yet complementary forces that govern the universe, the five elements of wood, fire, earth, metal and water arise. Feng Shui is based on the principle that everything comprises and is derived from the 5 elements i.e. wood, fire, earth, metal and water and uses environmental forces like wind and water to harness and bring in good luck in the form of good Chi.
Modern traditional Feng Shui has four major branches namely.
· San Yuan – Classical San Yuan has 2 major styles
o Primordial San Yuan – used primarily for Yin Feng Shui or selections and placement of gravesites , emphasizing Land or Forms Feng Shui
o San Yuan Xuan Kong – the next stage of evolution of San Yuan, which focuses on Yang Feng Shui or the buildings people live in. It uses the flying star techniques, environmental forms and interior design, five element remedies and cycles of time. It integrates Land Forms and Flying stars of a building or house.
· San Ho – This system is based primarily on external or Land Forms Feng Shui.
· Xuan Kong – This system uses Flying stars, nine palaces, and special star conditions and emphasizes on the construction time and date as a basis for calculations. Environmental forms are not emphasized
· Eight Mansions – A newer development in Feng Shui, this method applies the Gua or element of the person and /or of the building to identify auspicious areas in a building. It is based on the eight trigrams and Ba Gua.
A good Feng Shui practitioner integrates all the above techniques and schools to bring in substantial results and changes in a person’s life. The beauty of Feng Shui is that it is custom made and doesn’t work on the principle of ‘one size fits all.’ Extensive calculations and observations are required to be made before providing solutions. Feng Shui can be utilized for specific needs and requirements like good relationships, health, money, success, fame, conception of children etc. Since each element and direction means different things to different people, it can be manipulated and channelized to bring in the desired results within a short span of time.
It has been observed that the results of the application of good Feng Shui works on the principle of 9. People often see changes within 9 minutes, 9 hours, 9 days, 9 week or in severe cases 9 months. Usually a person begins to see results within 9 days to 9 weeks itself.
Feng Shui is a wonderful tool that can be life changing if applied in the proper manner. Whether we believe it or not, the environment and Chi around us does have a considerable impact on our lives and fate.Let us, for example, look into the working of a radio. If the radio is not fine-tuned, we can still hear the sound. The sound may not be very clear or audible, but we can hear it nevertheless. Good Feng Shui is like fine tuning the radio so that you can hear and enjoy the sound much better. Can you do without Good Feng Sui? Yes you can, but why not make life simpler and easier by using the available energy to bring in success and happiness in our lives?
